Knife & Edged Weapons Awareness:
Aim:
- To provide learners with an enhanced awareness of the risk posed by knives and edged weapons in the UK today, as well as what would constitute competent safe working practices when managing situations where knives and edged weapons may be present.
To successfully achieve the award delegates will be required to:
- The current risk posed by knives and edged weapons in the UK drawing reference from various Government, Home Office and Independent survey findings.
- The implications of the Human Rights Act 1998 with regard to the positive obligation imposed by Article 2 on all public authorities (direct or quasi) to preserve and protect life.
- The basic rights contained in English statute and common law in relation to an individual's right in defending themselves from an assailant armed with a knife or edged weapon.
- Understanding how the primitive stress response affects a persons ability to function during life threatening situations, based on current and past findings from the field of combat psychology.
- How to use Health and Safety statute and legislation to identify a hierarchical approach to developing safe systems of work and safe working practices.

- All staff and management who are either likely to encounter individuals armed with knives / edged weapons or who have responsibility and accountability for providing safe systems of work and safe working practices for staff who are likely to be exposed to the risk of a knife / edged weapon encounter. Door Supervisors, Security Operatives, Courtroom Security Staff, Care Staff, Education & Teaching Staff, Retail Staff, anyone who is expected to intervene.
